Travel Planning

Best Time to Visit

Sri Lanka enjoys year-round tropical weather, but understanding the monsoon patterns helps you plan the perfect trip.

🌊 West & South Coast

Best: December to April

The southwest monsoon (May-September) brings rain to this region. Visit during the dry season for the best beach weather in Colombo, Galle, Hikkaduwa, Mirissa, and Bentota. This is also the ideal time for the Hill Country (Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella).

Highlights: Beach holidays, Whale watching in Mirissa, Cultural Triangle, Tea Country

🏄 East Coast

Best: May to September

When the west coast experiences monsoon rains, the east coast enjoys sunny, dry weather. This is prime time for Arugam Bay surfing, Trincomalee beaches, and Pasikuda's calm waters.

Highlights: Arugam Bay surfing, Pigeon Island snorkeling, Trincomalee whale watching

🐘 Wildlife Safaris - Year Round

Sri Lanka's national parks offer excellent wildlife viewing throughout the year, though the dry season (June-September) often provides the best sightings as animals gather around water sources.

Yala National Park

Best February-July for leopard sightings. Closed September for maintenance.

Minneriya National Park

July-October for "The Gathering" — Asia's largest elephant congregation.
